Student Perceptions of the Use of Instructor-Made Videos in Online and Face-to-Face Classes

Texas Woman’s University Katherine Kensinger Rose The rise in online education, coupled with research suggesting the influence of instructor-learner interaction and frequency of student engagement with course materials on academic outcomes, highlight the need for innovative ways to keep the online learner connected to the course. This article describes results from a study conducted to examine students’ perceptions about the use of instructor-made videos that provided explanations of course assignments, syllabus requirements, discussed weekly topics, reviewed for exams, and answered student questions in video format in both a 100% online course and in several face-to-face courses. Bringing the Classroom to the Web: Effects of Using New Technologies to Capture and Deliver Lectures

University of Michigan Eric L. Dey, Helen E. Burn, David Gerdes
Technology expands instructional options for faculty, and this study examines the differential learning effects of offering a lecture on physics to students in a traditional classroom versus internet video formats. Based on an experiment conducted in a natural educational context, results indicate enhanced transfer of lecture information in the video formats relative to the live condition, with students also responding more positively to personalized video presentation. If You Post It, Will They Come? Lecture Availability in Introductory Psychology

University of Cincinnati Hove, M. Christina; Corcoran, Kevin J.
Web-enhanced educational programs such as Blackboard provide opportunities for instructors to make supplemental course materials available to students. However, little research has investigated the effects of unlimited access to course lectures on achievement and attendance in traditional postsecondary classroom settings. Thus, we investigated the effect of lecture presentation availability on class attendance and academic performance in 2 sections of introductory psychology courses. Students with unlimited access to lecture presentations earned significantly higher grades than students who did not have similar access. Although we did not find significant differences in attendance between classes, attendance moderated the relation between class format and course grade. We discuss further implications and future research. (Contains 1 table, 1 note, and 4 note.) Teaching of Psychology, v35 n2 p91-95 Apr 2008

iTunes University and the Classroom: Can Podcasts Replace Professors?

Department of Psychology, SUNY, Fredonia, NY Dani McKinney, Jennifer l. Dyck, Elise S. Luber
iTunes University, a website with downloadable educational podcasts, can provide students the opportunity to obtain professors’ lectures when students are unable to attend class. To determine the effectiveness of audio lectures in higher education, undergraduate general psychology students participated in one of two conditions. In the lecture condition, participants listened to a 25-min lecture given in person by a professor using PowerPoint slides. Copies of the slides were given to aid note-taking. In the podcast condition, participants received a podcast of the same lecture along with the PowerPoint handouts. Participants in both conditions were instructed to keep a running log of study time and activities used in preparing for an exam. One week from the initial session students returned to take an exam on lecture content. Results indicated that students in the podcast condition who took notes while listening to the podcast scored significantly higher than the lecture condition. The impact of mobile learning on classroom performance is discussed. Computers and Education, November, 2008.

Insights regarding undergraduate preference for lecture capture

The College of St. Scholastic, Duluth, Minnesota, USA Dr. Raj Veeramani, Professor at UW-Madison and Executive Director of the UW E-Business Institute

TThis research study set out to understand student attitudes toward the value of adding lecture capture to existing courses and to assess preferences for classes with a streaming option. A survey was sent to 29,078 undergraduate and graduate students at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in April 2008. Average response rate exceeded 25%. Of the survey participants, a significant number of undergraduates (47%) have taken a class in which lectures were recorded and made available online. Respondents answered 10 multiple-choice questions related to their perspective regarding streaming lectures and preference for streaming content., September 23, 2008.
