The Opencast community includes IT/AV professionals many institutions and organizations around the world. They represent a wide continuum of interests and implementations for audiovisual content, ranging from those who are just getting off the ground to those that have developed mature, enterprise-wide solutions. This variety of expertise is a vast resource at your disposal.

What is the Opencast Community?

The Opencast community is collaboration of individuals, higher education institutions and organizations working together to explore, develop, define and document best practices and technologies for management of audiovisual content in academia. Through the mailing list, website and collaboration among its members, the community offers guidance and information to help others choose the best approach for the delivery and usage of rich media online.

What are Opencast Projects?

The Opencast community supports community-driven projects to solve common issues in management of academic audiovisual content. These projects will include open source software development, such as Matterhorn, and research focused projects. The Opencast Community will support these projects through feedback and participation in project-related activities.

What is the Matterhorn Project?

Matterhorn is a project that aims to build an enterprise-level, easy-to-install open source podcast and rich media capture, processing and delivery system. Developed officially launched in July 2009. A 0.5 release is scheduled for January 2010, and a 1.0 release in August 2010. See the Opencast Matterhorn Wiki for more detailed information about the project.

How do I get involved in the Matterhorn project?

Matterhorn is an open source, community-driven project. A grant proposal to the William and Flora Hewlett and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundations are supporting the first year of the project. The proposal is under the leadership of University of California Berkeley Educational Technology Services, in partnership with several other institutions.

Individuals and institutions not included in the grant are welcome and encouraged to participate in the Matterhorn project. As the project progresses, more opportunities to get involved will become available. At this time, the best way to get involved is to join the Matterhorn mailing list, join us for our weekly Scrum of Scrums meetings, and participate in the discussions. You may also want to look at some of the other communication channels that are in use by the Matterhorn team.

Where can I find best practices for audiovisual content in academia?

The Shared Best Practices is a resource in development on a wide variety of areas related to for management of audiovisual content in academia. You are invited to use and contribute to this resource to help develop a comprehensive knowledgebase around these issues.

How do I join the Opencast mailing lists?

Opencast currently supports 2 mailing lists.  Both mailing lists require a subscription in order to post, but are open to anyone.

This mailing list is for general use as a valuable source of answers to questions related to academic podcasting.  There are over 500 subscribers to the listserv from institutions across the world, many of whom are experts in this area, and many who may have the same questions as you.

This mailing list is specific to discussions around the Matterhorn project.  Anyone interested in following or getting involved in this project is welcome to join.
