PuMuKIT (Multimedia Publication KIT) and ARCA project
PuMuKIT = Multimedia Publication KIT (from its abbreviation in Spanish) is our audiovisual content manager. PuMuKIT starts as a CMS (Content Management System) type system, specialised in this type of content but with certain peculiarities. The main classifying element within PuMuKIT is the MO (Multimedia Object); an MO might be a class or a lecture. An MO not only contains the video of the lecture but it can also incorporate all kinds of contents – audio archives, pdf or Powerpoint documents, URL’s etc. Among the metadata which complete OM’s are those defined in the Dublin Core Standard as complete with a set of additional fields. Two examples of MO:
Ex: Simple MO
Ex: Rich MO
The MO are grouped in Series. Serie = conference, subject, etc… Series are grouped into Thematic Chanels (sciences, engineering, Campus live, etc…) PuMuKIT's is fully customizable and is in use in several institutions in Spain. Some examples:
PuMuKIT: Galician Super Computing Center
Some URLs: http://www.uvigo.tv , http://tv.um.es , http://tv.cesga.es , http://unedtv.uvigo.es The system is based in what we call "PDP architecture". We divide up the tasks we have to carry out in order to provide the end to end service into three main functional areas: Production, Distribution and Publication.
Basic PDP Architecture
You can increase the complexity of the system including more than one Distribution technology or more than one Publising system.
PDP-II
PDP-III
Now PuMuKIT Publication module can generate: A Multimedia WEB portal like www.uvigo.tv or tv.cesga.es A Multimedia WEB portal for mobile devices And also has plugins for OAI-PMH, Google Video RSS, and ARCA RSS We are now developing plugins taht can export metadata + essence for automatic uploading contents to iTunes and YouTube ARCA is a federated metadata management system for multimedia contents at national level. ARCA is “Ark” in spanish (A.R.C.A=RSS Aggregator for the Academic Community)
"Essence" files remain in each institutional distribution server, metadata flows from the institutional publication server ( Institutional multimedia portal) to national multimedia portal. http://arca.rediris.es Now there are 15 institutions in the ARCA project. The ARCA servers offers more than 7000 hours of educational video footage. (99% in Spanish) We are now working to expand the project to South America. And that's all. This is what we have been doing the last 4 years :) I hope it could have some interest for the community Best Regards
